This recipe is inspired by the Germans who are certainly a potato-loving folk. Just a few of the most beloved national dishes include: kartoffelklöße/kartoffelknödeln (potato dumplings), kartoffelsalat (potato salad), kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes), kartoffelpüree (mashed potatoes), kartoffelsuppe (potato soup), kartoffelbrot (potato bread), kartoffelgratin (potato casserole), bratkartoffeln (pan-fried potatoes), ofenkartoffeln (baked potatoes), schupfnudeln (potato noodles), reibekuchen (potato fritters), rösti (hash browns), pommes (fries), and kroketten (croquettes). Clearly the Germans really, really love potatoes, and what’s not to like? These delicious tubers are amazing and go with everything, so it was high time that we made a potato cake, and now you can too!
Scalloped Potato Dome Cake
Equipment
- heat-resistant bowl
- Oven
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp softened butter
- 3 lbs russet or Idaho potatoes
- salt & pepper
- 16 fl oz heavy cream, boiled
- 9 Swiss cheese slices
- 12 bacon strips
- 1 puff pastry sheet
- 1 whisked egg for the egg wash
- 2 tbsp grated parmesan
Instructions
- Grease a heat-resistant bowl with butter and refrigerate.
Cut the potatoes into thin slices and place them in a large ungreased bowl. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper, pour in the boiled heavy cream, and mix well.
Remove the greased bowl from the refrigerator and arrange the potato slices in layers inside the bowl, as shown in the video.
Cover the first potato layer with two slices of cheese, followed by a layer of bacon, and more potato slices. Continue this process with 2 more layers of cheese, bacon, and potatoes.
Finally, place a pre-measured and pre-cut sheet of puff pastry on top and brush the egg wash on top. Place the bowl inside the preheated oven and bake at 325°F for 90 minutes.
In the meantime, pour the remaining cream from the ungreased bowl back into a pot. Add the parmesan cheese and pepper to the cream and cook again until the cheese is dissolved. Serve the cream sauce with the scalloped potato dome cake.
