Onion Kofta Kebab
This recipe deserves a medal not just for how delicious it is, but also because it's super creative. First things first: What comes to mind when you think of the word "kebab?" Probably shish kebab, the beloved outdoor dish featuring perfectly grilled pieces of meat and crispy vegetables. Well, we're here to show you how to make a massive kebab out of an onion, so go ahead and grab a big one, together with a long wooden skewer, some ground beef, and a glass filled with rice, and let's get started!
Equipment
- Oven
- Bowl
- Wooden Skewer
- Glass
Ingredients
- 1 yellow onion chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 2 bunches parsley chopped
- 1 mini bell pepper chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp harissa sauce or roasted red pepper sauce
- 14 oz ground beef
- salt & pepper to taste
- 2 slices white bread crusts removed, soaked in water and wrung out
- 1 large white onion peeled and cut in half, layers separated
- 1 glass filled with rice to stabilize the kebab
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and chop the yellow onion, garlic, mini bell pepper, and parsley.
- Put everything in a bowl and add the egg, harissa sauce, and ground beef, and season with salt and pepper. Remove the bread crusts from the slices of bread and soak the bread in water. Wring out the wet bread, tear it into small pieces, and add to the bowl.
- Peel the large white onion and cut it in half. Separate the individual onion layers.
- Fill up a glass with rice and stick a long wooden skewer into it. Then put one large onion layer on the skewer with the hollow opening facing up and push it all the way down. Now fill the onion mold with the kofta mixture.
- Repeat the layering process until the first half of the onion is all filled up.
- Now put the smallest onion layer (of the other half) on the skewer, spread the ground beef on it and repeat the same process from small to large until the other half of the onion is used up. Then coat the entire middle part of the onion with the remaining kofta mixture.
- Put the kebab skewer in the oven at 350°F for 25 minutes until the meat is golden brown. If you want your meat even crispier on the outside, just turn on your broiler.
- Serve the onion kebab with garlic sauce and hot sauce, or even plain yogurt will do. If you love the combination of meat and onions, this recipe will not disappoint!
