If you’ve been checking out our recipes for a while, you’ll know that we love to take something very simple and basic and elevate it to the next level by adding interesting new components. This credo also applies to this sheet cake recipe where a regular screw top is used to create holes in the cake, which are then filled with all kinds of sweet treats, like caramel, peanut butter, Nutella, and whipped cream. And of course, it wouldn’t be a great sheet cake recipe if there wasn’t a ton of buttercream frosting involved!
Multi-Treat Sheet Cake With Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients
- 8 eggs
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 cups flour
- 2 tbsp baking powder
- 1 cup milk room temperature
- caramel syrup
- Raffaello coconut balls
- whipped cream
- peanut butter
- strawberry jam
- Nutella
- 3.5 sticks butter room temperature
- 1.67 cups powdered sugar sifted
- 0.75 cup cream cheese room temperature
- 1.25 cups cocoa powder sifted (for the chocolate buttercream frosting)
- white chocolate shavings
- strawberries
- bananas
- strawberry syrup
- shredded coconuts
- caramel syrup
- Twix bar
Instructions
- For the cake batter, first separate the eggs. Beat the egg whites until frothy, add the sugar, and beat both ingredients until the meringue is firm. Stir in the egg yolks one at a time for about 30 seconds each. Sift the flour with the baking powder and, in 3 batches, fold the mixture into the meringue together with the milk. Pour the cake batter onto a greased baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven set to 350°F for 30 minutes.
- Once the sheet cake has cooled, remove it from the baking sheet and trim the edges as needed to create a rectangular shape (our cake is 12 x 14 inches).
- Use a screw top to make 6 rows of 5 indentations each and save the pieces that you cut out of the cake. Try to use a twisting motion to get the pieces out, that way you can put them back into the holes more easily later.
- Fill the holes in the cake with caramel syrup, Raffaello coconut balls, whipped cream, peanut butter, strawberry jam, and Nutella.
- Close the holes with the cut-out pieces of cake and trim if necessary.
- For the buttercream frosting, beat the butter with a hand mixer until creamy, then gradually sift in the powdered sugar and fold in the cream cheese. Divide the frosting in half and add the cocoa powder to one half. Spread white buttercream frosting on the sides of the cake and then cover the top of the cake alternately with white buttercream frosting and chocolate buttercream frosting. Use a piece of parchment paper to create straight lines.
- Decorate the lines with white chocolate shavings, strawberry slices, banana slices, strawberry syrup, quartered strawberries, coconut flakes, caramel syrup, and Twix pieces.
