Equipment

  • 4-inch round casserole dish
  • large saucepan

Ingredients

  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 8 soft caramels + 3 tbsp hot water
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder + 3 tbsp hot water
  • 2-3 tbsp strawberry jam
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar + 1 tbsp water
  • 1 sunflower seed

Instructions

  • Tear the slices of white bread into small pieces, combine with the sugar and hot water, and let soak for 10 minutes. Separate the egg yolk and egg white and stir the egg yolk into the bread mixture to form a creamy cake batter. Beat the egg white until stiff and fold the mixture into the cake batter. Pour the cake batter into a greased 4-inch round casserole dish, place the casserole dish in a large saucepan, fill the saucepan with water around the casserole dish, and cook over medium-high heat for 40 minutes until the cake is browned on the outside. Remove the finished cake from the casserole dish and let cool.
  • Pour hot water over 7 of the soft caramels, wait for the caramels to melt, and then whisk the mixture until creamy. Slice the cake in half widthwise, spread the caramel sauce in a ring around the outer edge of one side of the cake, fill the center with strawberry jam, and place the other cake half on top.
  • Combine the cocoa powder and hot water and let the mixture cool down a bit before pouring it over the cake. Once the chocolate icing has set, combine the powdered sugar and water and drizzle the white icing on top of the cake. For the edible birthday candle, roll the remaining soft caramel into the shape of a candle, top with a sunflower seed, and place in the center of the cake.
