When most people think of white bread, they see two meal options: toast or sandwich. But there’s so much more you can do with sliced bread than spread some jam on it or throw some meat in between it. In fact, why not combine the two options, and then step it up a notch? That’s right — it’s about time you tried toasted bread cones stuffed with ham and cheese! Not only does this delicious recipe feature multiple layers of baked Swiss cheese, it’s also served with a creamy dipping sauce that will have all your guests coming back for more.

Ingredients

  • 60 slices white bread
  • butter
  • 10.5 oz cubed ham
  • 10.5 oz cubed cheese
  • 7 oz shredded Swiss cheese
  • 3 tbsp butter for béchamel sauce
  • 3 tbsp flour for béchamel sauce
  • 17 fl oz milk for béchamel sauce
  • salt & pepper for béchamel sauce
  • 1 pinch nutmeg for béchamel sauce
  • 3.5 oz shredded cheese for béchamel sauce
  • 2 tbsp chives chopped, for béchamel sauce

Instructions

  • Cut the crusts off all the slices of bread and then cut the crusts into small pieces.
Heat some butter in a pan and fry the bread crumbs until golden brown.
Roll all slices of bread flat and roll them into a cone starting from the corner. Mix the ham and cheese cubes together and stuff each bread cone until full.
Place a small bowl in the center of a large, heat-resistant platter, place about 20 bread cones around the bowl with the tips facing in, and sprinkle some shredded cheese evenly over the top. Repeat with a second layer on top of the first layer, and finally a third layer on top of the second layer. Bake the platter for 15 minutes at 355°F.
  • Heat the butter in a saucepan and stir in the flour with a whisk. Stir in the milk and season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Finally, stir in the cheese and then the chives.
Pour the sauce into the small bowl in the middle of the appetizer platter. Enjoy your ham and cheese-stuffed bread cones as they are, or feel free to dip them in the béchamel sauce.
