Here you’ll find 3 delicious recipes for stromboli. But wait, isn’t stromboli an island in southern Italy? As it happens, it’s also a dough cylinder with a meat filling, not too dissimilar to a calzone. And it’s even better with chicken!
BBQ Onion Stromboli
Equipment
- Frying Pan
- Baking tray
Ingredients
- 2 chicken breasts
- 3 tbsp barbecue sauce
- 1 roll of ready-made pizza dough (approx. 14 oz)
- 3 red onions, chopped and fried
- 4 slices cheese
- 1 beaten egg
- 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
- oil for frying
- salt, pepper
Instructions
- First fry the chicken breasts in oil on both sides and season them with salt and pepper. Then take them out of the pan.
- With two forks, shred the chicken into bite-sized pieces and mix them with the barbecue sauce.
- Roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle on a floured work surface. Place the cheese slices in a line in the middle of the dough, overlapping each other slightly. Spread the chicken evenly over the cheese and then spread the onions on top of the chicken.
- Now pull your dough packet together: fold the longer sides of the dough on top of each other over the layer of onions. Then fold the shorter sides in and press them down. Turn the filled dough over, so that the folded edges are underneath, then paint the smooth top surface with egg. Sprinkle parmesan over the dough, then make a few diagonal cuts in the top.
- Bake the whole thing for 30 minutes in a convection oven at 340°F. Tip: To make your pizza pocket look even better for serving, you can sprinkle fresh chopped parsley on it, with some more parmesan, after baking.
