Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you want to make sure you’re starting your mornings off right, and there’s no better way to do that than with a culinary tour around the world! 

1. Spain – Churros & Chocolate

You’ll Need:

For the churros:

  • 10 fl oz water
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 4 oz butter, cubed
  • 5 oz flour
  • 4 eggs
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • cinnamon & sugar to garnish

For the chocolate dipping sauce:

  • 16 fl oz milk
  • 6 oz dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa)
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp corn starch

Here’s How:

1.1 For the churros, heat the water with the salt, sugar, and butter in a saucepan. Then add the sifted flour and stir everything together until a dough forms. Remove the pot from the stove and place the dough in a bowl. Let it cool for a few minutes before gradually adding the eggs. Knead the dough well and place it in a piping bag.

1.2 Heat some oil in a saucepan and pipe the churros into the hot oil one at a time. Cook until golden brown, place them on a plate, and sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top.

1.3 For the chocolate dipping sauce, first dissolve the corn starch in a small bowl with some of the milk and set it aside for now. Heat the rest of the milk along with the dark chocolate in a saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Add the corn starch mix, stir everything together, add the sugar, and stir again. Let the chocolate mix cook for about 5 minutes, until it has thickened. 

2. Brazil – Papaya Plate with Bread & Coffee

3. China – Baozi & Congee with Jasmine Tea

You’ll Need:

For the baozi dough:

  • 16 g flour
  • 8 fl oz lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • pinch of sugar
  • ½ tsp salt

For the baozi filling:

  • 8 oz ground pork
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 piece of ginger, chopped
  • 3 tbsp leek, finely diced

For the congee:

  • 3 oz jasmine rice
  • 32 fl oz water

Here’s How:

3.1 Rinse the jasmine rice in a collander under running water and then add it to a saucepan with the water. Let the rice simmer for about 1-2 hours over a low heat.

3.2 For the baozi dough, mix the flour with lukewarm water, dry yeast, sugar, and salt and knead into a smooth dough. Let the dough sit for for about 1 hour, until it has doubled in size. Then knead it again, roll it out, and cut it into small pieces.

3.3 For the baozi filling, mix the ground pork with the egg, soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, salt, chopped ginger, and finely diced leek. Form the dough as shown in the video, place about 1 tbsp of the ground pork filling in the middle, and seal the dough shut. Repeat with the rest of the dough and filling. Cover the stuffed dumplings with a cloth, let sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes, and then steam them in hot water for about 15 minutes.

4. Finland – Karelian Pasties with Black Currant Juice

You’ll Need:

For the  pasty filling:

  • 6 fl oz water
  • 5 oz round-grain rice
  • 16 fl oz milk
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg

For the pasty dough:

  • 6 fl oz water
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 14 oz rye flour
  • 3 oz white flour
  • 1-2 tsp oil

Extra:

  • melted butter to brush on the dough
  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • chives
  • soft butter
  • black currant juice

Here’s How:

4.1 First prepare the filling. Put the rice in boiling water and let it cook until most of the water is absorbed. Add the milk, reduce the heat, and let simmer for about 40 minutes, stirring regularly, until the porridge is really thick. Let it cool and then add the egg and salt.

4.2 For the dough, add the salt and flour to the water and oil and knead until smooth. Divide the dough into pieces and roll them out into small circles. Spoon some of the rice porridge onto the dough circles, fold the edges over, and bake at 475°F for 12-15 minutes. When finished, brush melted butter over the pasties and top with chopped boiled egg, soft butter, salt, and chives.

5. Kenya – Mandazi with Chai Tea

You’ll Need:

  • 8 oz flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 2-3 tbsp sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 8 fl oz milk
  • oil for frying

Here’s How:

5.1 Mix the flour, baking powder, and sugar together in a bowl. Create a hollow in the middle and add the egg. Gradually add the milk and then knead the dough. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let sit for about 15 minutes.

5.2 Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into triangles.

5.3 Heat oil in a pan or pot and fry the mandazi until golden brown. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve with chai tea.

6. USA – Bacon & Eggs with Toast, Hash Browns, and Smoothie

You’ll Need:

For the hash browns:

  • 6 oz waxy potatoes
  • salt & pepper
  • butter

For the strawberry smoothie:

  • 10 fl oz milk or yogurt
  • 3 oz ice cubes
  • 14 oz strawberries

Extra:

  • bacon
  • eggs
  • toast

Here’s How:

6.1 For the hash browns, peel and grate the potatoes. Wash the shredded potatoes with cold water to remove the starch. Drain and squeeze out the excess water, form hash brown patties with your hands, and fry the patties in butter until golden brown on both sides. Season with salt and pepper.

6.2 For the strawberry smoothie, blend the milk (or yogurt), ice cubes, and strawberries until smooth. Serve with bacon, eggs, and toast.

7. Germany – Fried Potatoes & Eggs with Black Forest Ham, Gherkins, and Coffee

You’ll Need:

For the fried potatoes & eggs:

  • 6 oz boiled, peeled potatoes
  • 2 oz bacon, diced
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • salt & pepper
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • chives

Extra:

  • Black Forest ham
  • gherkins
  • coffee
  • condensed milk

Here’s How:

7.1 Cook the bacon and remove it from the pan. Slice the boiled potatoes and add them to the bacon grease, together with the chopped onions. Cook until the onions are glassy.

7.2 Whisk the eggs, stir in the milk and chives, and pour the mixture over the rest of the ingredients in the pan. Season with salt and pepper and cook for about 7 to 10 minutes on low heat, stirring occasionally like you would scrambled eggs. Serve with gherkins, Black Forest ham, and some coffee with a bit of sugar and splash of condensed milk.

8. Colombia – Arepas & Avocado with Orange Juice

You’ll Need:

For the arepas:

  • 12 oz cornmeal
  • 20 fl oz lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp salt

Extra:

  • avocados
  • orange juice

Here’s How:

Dissolve the salt in water and gradually stir in the cornmeal. Once a dough has formed, form equally-sized balls and flatten them by hand. Heat some oil in a pan over a high heat and fry the arepas for 4-5 minutes on each side. Blot out the oil. Crush the avocados with a fork and season with lime juice, salt, and pepper. Spread the avocado cream over the arepas and serve with a refreshing glass of orange juice.

9. Japan – Grilled Fish & Rice with Green Tea

You’ll Need:

  • white fish of your choice
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil for cooking
  • green tea
  • 1 bowl of rice
  • 1 raw egg for the rice

Here’s How:

Cook the rice, and once it has cooled, stir in the raw egg. Fry the fish of your choice with some sesame oil and serve everything with a cup of green tea.
