Blooming Onion
The classic blooming onion from your favorite steakhouse is quite easy to make at home. It not only looks amazing, but it also tastes delicious.
Equipment
- Deep Fryer
- Mixing Bowl
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 0.5 tsp oregano
- 2 tbsp paprika
- pepper to taste
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 eggs
- oil for deep frying
Instructions
- Cut off the top of the onion to create a flat surface. With the flat side facing down, cut it into quarters without going all the way through the onion. Make four equally sized incisions into each of the quarter sections to create 16 sections at the end. Turn over the onion, it should look like a blooming flower.
- Mix together the flour, cayenne pepper, salt, garlic powder, oregano, paprika, and pepper to make the breading for the crust. Dip the blooming onion gently into the breading. Using a spoon, scoop the spice mixture into the inside of the onion as well. Turn the onion flower and carefully shake off excess flour.
- Mix the whisked eggs and milk to create the egg wash. Dip the onion into the egg wash, using a spoon to ensure the onion gets wet everywhere. Double-dip the onion into the breading mixture. Place the blooming onion in your freezer for about one hour to help the breading stick better.
- Place the blooming onion cut-side down into a pot with the heat on high. Fry the ends of the onion until crispy. Turn the onion over and fry it on medium heat for a maximum of 10 minutes. Place the onion on paper towels to dry off.
- Place the onion on a plate and serve with a dip in the center.
