Pizza dough is just for pizza, right? Not necessarily! You can actually make a lot of great sweet and savory snacks with pizza dough, as the following 3 recipes prove.
Pizza Dough Recipe
You’ll Need:
- 8 cups flour
- 1 tsp dry yeast
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2⅓ cups lukewarm water
Here’s How:
Combine the ingredients for the pizza dough, knead until a soft dough forms, and let sit covered for 1 hour. This recipe will make enough pizza dough for all 3 recipes.
1. Sesame Seed Blossoms
Yield: 6
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 12 minutes
You’ll Need:
- pizza dough
- 1 tbsp black sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
- 1 whisked egg for the egg wash
Here’s How:
Take a small amount of pizza dough and roll it into a ball. Place the dough ball on a flat surface and push a thin drinking glass into the center of the dough. Make 12 even incisions in the dough around the glass. Remove the glass and squeeze every 2 petals together to make a flower. Repeat the previous steps until you have 6 dough flowers. Place the dough flowers on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and brush the egg wash over the tops of the flowers. Sprinkle black sesame seeds in the middle of each dough flower and white sesame seeds on the petals. Transfer the baking tray to a preheated oven and cook at 350°F for 12 minutes.
2. Sausage & Cheese Pockets
Yield: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 12 minutes
You’ll Need:
- pizza dough
- 4 Italian sausages
- 4 slices of cheese
- 1 whisked egg for the egg wash
Here’s How:
Roll a large portion of the pizza dough out into a circle on a floured work surface and cut it into 4 equal sections. Make 3 V-shaped incisions in each dough section. Squeeze the raw Italian sausage out of its casing and place it in the middle of 1 of the dough sections. Repeat with the other 3 Italian sausages and dough sections. Top each row of sausage with a folded piece of cheese, fold the corners of the dough over the cheese so that they slightly overlap, and seal the dough. Brush the egg wash over the sausage & cheese pockets and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Transfer the baking tray to a preheated oven and cook at 350°F for 12 minutes.
3. Cinnamon Sugar Knots
Yield: 12
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
You’ll Need:
- pizza dough
- ½ cup melted butter
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts
- 1 whisked egg for the egg wash
Here’s How:
Roll the remaining pizza dough out into a rectangle and brush melted butter over it. Combine the cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle the mixture over the dough, along with the chopped hazelnuts. Fold the bottom ⅓ section of dough up over the middle, then fold the top ⅓ section of dough down over the middle. Cut the folded dough into 12 even pieces, twist each dough piece, and fold each twisted dough piece into a knot. Place the dough knots on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Brush the egg wash over the dough knots, transfer the baking tray to a preheated oven, and cook at 400°F for 10 minutes.
