When you think of churros, you probably think of cinnamon, sugar, and chocolate, an admittedly delicious way to eat them. But there are plenty of other amazing ways to serve everyone’s favorite Spanish dessert – and not all of them are sweet. These 2 churro recipes are about to show you how much choux pastry can actually do. We’ll start off with our Toffifay churro dessert bowls filled with a dreamy, creamy caramel, hazelnut, and chocolate filling. And if that doesn’t convince you, we’re also going to prepare a double cheeseburger with churro buns. These ideas might seems a little crazy at first, but give them a try and you’ll know that there’s nothing a churro can’t do!

1. Toffifay Churro Bowls

Yield: 12

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cooking Time: 1 hour

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ingredients:

For the choux pastry dough:

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ¼ cup corn starch
  • 1 stick butter, cubed
  • 1¼ cups flour
  • 3 eggs

For the toffifay filling:

  • 1¼ cups caramel sauce
  • 12 peeled hazelnuts
  • 12 chocolate drops

Instructions:

For the choux pastry dough, add the water, milk, salt, sugar, and corn starch to a saucepan over medium heat and whisk until there are no lumps. Add the butter to the saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the flour. Place the saucepan back over medium heat and cook until the moisture has evaporated. Pour the mixture into a bowl and stir in the eggs, one at a time. Transfer the choux pastry dough to a piping bag with a small star nozzle and pipe the mixture onto the bottom of a 12-cup muffin pan, as shown in the video. Transfer the muffin pan to a preheated oven and cook at 350°F for 1 hour. Remove the muffin pan from the oven and let cool for 1 hour. Remove the churro bowls from the muffin pan and fill each bowl with caramel sauce, a hazelnut, and a chocolate drop.

2. Double Churro Cheeseburger

Yield: 1

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cooking Time: 1 hour

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ingredients:

For the choux pastry dough:

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ¼ cup corn starch
  • 1 stick butter, cubed
  • 1¼ cups flour
  • 3 eggs

For the cheeseburger filling:

  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 2 tbsp burger sauce
  • 2 tomato slices
  • 2 onion slices
  • 2 cheeseburger patties

Instructions:

For the choux pastry dough, add the water, milk, salt, sugar, and corn starch to a saucepan over medium heat and whisk until there are no lumps. Add the butter to the saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the flour. Place the saucepan back over medium heat and cook until the moisture has evaporated. Pour the mixture into a bowl and stir in the eggs, one at a time. Line a baking tray with parchment paper, place 2x 4-inch bowls upside-down in the center, and grease and flour the outside of the bowls. Transfer the choux pastry dough to a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe onto the bowls, as shown in the video. Transfer the baking tray to a preheated oven and cook at 350°F for 1 hour. Remove the baking tray from the oven, remove the churro bowls from the glass bowls, and let cool for 1 hour. Fill each churro bowl with a cheeseburger patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, and burger sauce and put the 2 bowls together to create a giant double churro cheeseburger.
